Goldman Sachs: The U.S. power grid will face power shortages by 2030
Goldman Sachs An analyst at the firm said that by 2030, as power demand from data centers surges, nearly all U.S. power grids will lack critical reserve capacity, putting the United States at a disadvantage in the race for artificial intelligence. “We’re not adding enough capacity,” said Samantha Darte, co-head of global commodities research at Goldman Sachs.Power grids typically aim for at least 15% reserve capacity—the difference between peak demand and the available generation from coal, natural gas, nuclear, and renewable energy plants. Dart noted that reserve capacity is already insufficient in some grids, and this gap is expected to widen over the next decade as data centers drive demand growth.
