Meta plans to cut spending on its metaverse team and redirect the savings toward its VR headset business
Svmuu News: According to The New York Times, three employees familiar with the matter said that Meta Platforms (META.O) is considering layoffs in a division of its Reality Labs unit that focuses on the “metaverse,” with the cuts potentially beginning as early as next month and affecting 10% to 30% of the team. The team is primarily responsible for VR headsets and VR-based social networks. Reality Labs consists of the metaverse division and the wearables division. Sources said management expects to redirect the funds saved from the layoffs toward the AR glasses project. Meta launched AR glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban in 2021, and sales have exceeded the company’s internal targets. People familiar with the matter said Meta is reevaluating its metaverse-related investments, and within the metaverse division, executives are considering significant cuts to VR-related positions.
