Google Play in South Korea will remove apps from unregistered overseas cryptocurrency exchanges, effective January 28
Svmuu News: Google Play in South Korea will prohibit overseas cryptocurrency exchange and wallet apps that are not registered locally from being listed or updated. According to Google’s official policy, cryptocurrency trading platforms and wallet service providers must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of South Korea as virtual asset service providers in order to continue operating in the app store. As a result of this policy, starting January 28, South Korean Android users will be unable to download or update apps from overseas exchanges that have not completed registration via Google Play, including Binance, Bybit, and OKX. Currently, only 27 domestic platforms, including Upbit and Bithumb, have completed registration.Reports indicate that while web-based access remains available, this measure may impact South Korean retail investors who rely on overseas platforms for high-leverage trading, arbitrage, and access to a wider selection of tokens. The local community has begun circulating workarounds such as using VPNs or installing APKs, but these methods are considered to pose significant security risks. (The Block)
