Negotiations between the two parties regarding the project had been stalled for a long time due to financing issues and OpenAI's continuously changing requirements. Informed sources stated that after the negotiations ultimately fell through, it created an opportunity for Meta's involvement. Meta is currently considering leasing the data center site in Abilene, Texas, originally planned for the expansion, from the developer Crusoe. It is reported that Nvidia played a facilitating role in connecting Meta with the developer.
