US Media: Iranian Parliament Speaker Threatens to Cut Off Bab el-Mandeb Strait Shipping
Svmuu According to a report on the NBC News website on April 3, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, appeared to threaten to block commercial shipping traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint in the Red Sea. As reported, Ghalibaf posted on social media platform X: "What percentage of the world's oil, liquefied natural gas, wheat, rice, and fertilizer shipments pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait?" He continued, "Which countries and companies have the highest share of cargo volume passing through this strait?" In recent years, ships passing through this region have repeatedly been attacked by Yemen's Houthi group, which is allied with the Iranian regime. The threat regarding the Bab el-Mandeb Strait comes at a time when Iran has largely already cut off shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has thrown the global economy into chaos. (Reference News)
