Svmuu News: Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken stated that it is being extorted by a criminal organization, which threatened to release videos of unauthorized access to its internal systems. The company emphasized that no systemic breach occurred, customer funds remain secure at all times, and it will not pay the ransom to the attackers.
Kraken disclosed that the incident stemmed from improper access actions by individuals associated with its customer support team, occurring in two separate incidents. This involved limited data access to approximately 2,000 accounts (roughly 0.02% of its total user base). The company has identified the individuals involved, terminated their access privileges, notified affected users, and strengthened its security controls.
Kraken's Chief Security Officer, Nick Percoco, stated that the company is cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the investigation and believes it has evidence to track and apprehend the relevant individuals. He noted that current attacks are trending towards "insider infiltration + social engineering tactics," reflecting the ongoing security challenges the cryptocurrency industry faces in an environment of high-value assets and complex technology.
