During the early years of Maduro's presidency, Venezuela shipped $5.2 billion worth of gold to Switzerland
According to Reuters, customs data shows that during the early years of Venezuelan President Maduro’s administration, Venezuela shipped nearly 4.14 billion Swiss francs ($5.2 billion) worth of gold to Switzerland. The data shows that from 2013 (the year Maduro took office) to 2016, the South American nation shipped 113 metric tons of gold to Switzerland. Swiss broadcaster SRF reported that the gold came from the Venezuelan central bank. At the time, the government was selling gold to prop up its economy. Customs data shows that Venezuela did not export any gold to Switzerland from 2017, when the EU imposed sanctions, through 2025.
