Zhipu Goes Public; Tang Jie Calls for a Full Return to Basic Model Research in Internal Memo
On January 8, the day of Zhipu’s IPO, Tang Jie—a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University, as well as Zhipu’s founding initiator and chief scientist—released an internal letter announcing the imminent launch of the next-generation model, GLM-5. Tang Jie described today as “an exciting day in Zhipu’s history.” While he did not directly address the controversy surrounding the business models of large-scale model companies or provide Zhipu’s 2026 commercialization goals, he emphasized that theories, technologies, or products that are truly “used by people” and can help more people are the key achievements for Zhipu on its journey toward AGI. The internal letter noted that Zhipu successfully completed the strategy set at the beginning of 2025 as scheduled: releasing a model in April to “gain a foothold,” a model by mid-year to “enter the game” (becoming one of the best), and a top-ranked model by year-end. This strategy of a comprehensive return to foundational model research is Zhipu’s response to the impact of DeepSeek. (LatePost)
