Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum Protocol development should incorporate explicit simplification and garbage collection mechanisms
Svmuu News: vitalik.eth posted on X, stating that protocol simplicity is a crucial aspect of trustlessness, passing the exit test, and autonomy. Even with a high degree of decentralization, if a protocol becomes bloated due to hundreds of thousands of lines of code or complex cryptography, it will ultimately fail.Vitalik Buterin’s concern regarding Ethereum protocol development is that overloading it with new features to meet specific needs will undermine long-term autonomy. To address the issue of protocols becoming bloated over time due to backward compatibility, the Ethereum development process requires clear simplification and garbage collection mechanisms.Simplification standards include minimizing lines of code, avoiding dependencies on unnecessarily complex technical components, and adding more invariants. Garbage collection can be implemented incrementally or on a large scale, such as replacing PoW with PoS, or downgrading low-frequency complex functions to smart contract code via Rosetta-style backward compatibility.Vitalik Buterin hopes that the pace of change in Ethereum will slow down in the long run, and he is working to prevent redundant parts from becoming a permanent burden on the protocol.
