On February 25, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning presided over a regular press conference. At the briefing, a reporter asked: “The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service stated yesterday that the United Kingdom and France are preparing to transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine, as they believe Ukraine should be provided with atomic bombs, or at least ‘dirty bombs,’ in order to secure more favorable conditions for ending the conflict. What is China’s comment on this? Mao Ning stated, “I am not aware of the relevant situation. As a matter of principle, China has consistently maintained that nuclear weapons must not be used and nuclear war must not be waged, and that international nuclear non-proliferation obligations must be strictly observed.” Dialogue regarding the Ukraine crisis has now begun. We hope all parties will seize this opportunity to reach a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement. We call on all relevant parties to remain calm and exercise restraint, and to avoid any actions that could lead to misunderstandings, misjudgments, or even an escalation of the situation.
