Dell has unveiled an outdoor server designed for Cloud RAN and edge AI, marking the first liquid-cooled outdoor server of its kind.
The PowerEdge XR9700 features a fully enclosed, weatherproof design (IP66-rated) that enables stable operation in extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to 46°C and withstands direct sunlight. The device utilizes closed-loop liquid cooling technology to achieve high-performance thermal management within a compact 15-liter space (roughly the size of a backpack), eliminating the need for a traditional data center environment. Equipped with the latest Intel Xeon 6 SoC and integrated vRAN acceleration technology, a single server can support up to 15 5G sectors. It is expected to be officially launched worldwide in the second half of 2026. Japan’s Rakuten Mobile has already planned to deploy this server across its nationwide network to handle 5G signals and edge artificial intelligence (AI) tasks.
