11 U.S. senators call on federal agencies to investigate Binance's compliance with sanctions
Svmuu News: Eleven U.S. senators have written to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Attorney General Pamela Bondi, calling for a comprehensive review of whether Binance complies with U.S. sanctions and anti-money laundering requirements, as well as an assessment of its implementation of the 2023 settlement agreement. The letter cited reports indicating that approximately $1.7 billion in digital assets flowed through Binance to entities linked to Iranian terrorism, including organizations associated with the Houthis and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Investigators also found that over 1,500 accounts were accessed by Iranian users, as well as potential activities related to evading Russian sanctions. The letter further noted that some Binance compliance staff who identified suspicious transactions were subsequently fired, and law enforcement agencies reported that Binance has become less cooperative in providing customer information.Senators Chris Van Hollen, Ruben Gallego, and nine other senators co-signed the letter, expressing concern over Binance’s launch of payment cards in the former Soviet Union and its stablecoin-related partnership projects, believing these products could be used to circumvent sanctions. The senators requested that relevant agencies report on the progress of the review by March 13.Additionally, Senator Richard Blumenthal launched a congressional investigation into Binance on Tuesday, requesting relevant documents and internal records from Binance CEO Richard Teng. Binance denied the allegations, stating that it has identified and reported suspicious activity to authorities and does not allow Iranian users to use its platform. (Cointelegraph)
