Commits to crypto projects have dropped by 75%, as developers shift their focus to the AI sector
Svmuu News: The blockchain ecosystem is losing developers, while AI projects are dominating growth on GitHub. Artemis data shows that since early 2025, weekly code commits for crypto projects have dropped from approximately 850,000 to 210,000—a decline of about 75%—while the number of active developers has fallen by 56% to approximately 4,600. Meanwhile, GitHub added approximately 36 million new developers in 2025, bringing its global user base to over 180 million, with overall submissions on the platform increasing by about 25% year-over-year. Among these, AI-related repositories exceeded 4.3 million, with the number of repositories incorporating large language model (LLM) SDKs growing by approximately 178% to over 1.1 million. Generative AI projects saw over 1 million monthly active contributors. Jupyter Notebook repositories grew by approximately 75%, Dockerfile repositories by approximately 120%, and TypeScript surpassed Python and JavaScript to become the most widely used programming language on GitHub. Within the crypto space, weekly active developers on Ethereum fell by 34% over three months to 2,811, Solana dropped by 40% to 942, and Base declined by 52% to 378. Aptos saw a developer exodus of about 60%, BNB Chain saw a 85% drop in commits, and Celo saw a 52% decline. The only category still growing is wallet infrastructure, with active developers increasing by about 6% to 308. Electric Capital’s annual report shows that the industry’s monthly active developers peaked at approximately 31,000 in 2022 and fell to about 23,600 in 2024. Among the remaining developers, those with over two years of experience accounted for about 70% of commits, while the number of newcomers with less than 12 months of experience fell by 58%.
