Foreign Ministry: Japan’s right-wing’s growing nuclear ambitions pose a serious threat to world peace and stability
At a regular press conference on January 8, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning, responding to questions regarding the research report titled “The Nuclear Ambitions of Japan’s Right Wing: A Serious Threat to World Peace” released that day, stated that the growing nuclear ambitions of Japan’s right wing are a dangerous sign of the resurgence of Japanese militarism and pose a serious threat to world peace and stability. Japan should heed the just calls of the international community, immediately clarify its position on nuclear weapons, and strictly abide by its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the “Three Non-Nuclear Principles.” Mao Ning pointed out that since the new Japanese government took office, it has been in a rush to expose the nuclear ambitions of Japan’s right-wing. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and other high-ranking officials have pushed to revise the “Three Non-Nuclear Principles,” hinted at introducing nuclear submarines, advocated for strengthening so-called “extended deterrence” for Japan, and openly claimed that Japan should possess nuclear weapons. Japan’s actions constitute a serious challenge to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, which is anchored in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, as well as to the post-war international order, and have drawn strong opposition from the international community and people from all walks of life within Japan.
